Block III: New Risks

The New Risks course is conducted in cooperation with the Center for Comparative and International Studies (CIS) of ETH Zurich and the University of Zurich and the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies of Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. This course introduces participants to the causes and origins of contemporary risks and threats to security, with a specific focus on the emerging risk landscape and Asia.

Learning Objectives

The main goals are to raise awareness of systemic security transformations and elements of change, to identify and understand new and emerging security risks at the strategic level, and to contrast and compare the instruments used by state and non-state actors in challenging security.

Learning Content

The course block contains the following topics amongst others: Facets of terrorism and organized crime including cyber defense and bioterrorism, proliferation and information security. Another field to be dealt with is nation-state building and patterns of ethno-nationalist conflicts, features of new wars, system transformation, corporate social responsibilities and public-private partnerships. Finally, themes around globalization and environment such as energy security are covered.
